Relay Team Rules

1. All athletes must be at the Forum de Beyrouth check-in area by 05:30 on November 27. Should any team be missing a member of their team it will be up to the Relay Team Director to agree with the team which of the athletes will be required to run two legs of the race. Should more than one team member be absent the team will automatically be disqualified.

2. The Athletes will deposit their personal baggage for the finish line with the appropriate officials at the Forum de Beyrouth.

3. Athletes may be subject to dope testing at the discretion of the Lebanese Athletic Federation. All athletes are obligated to comply or may face disqualification. Any athlete disqualified by the judges will be notified within 30 minutes of the end of the race (by 14:30 on November 27).

4.  Should any team wish to contest the official results they must deposit $100 with the referees at the head judges tent at the finish line within 30 minutes of the end of the race (by 14:30 on November 27) or the complaint will not be recognized (see IAAF official rules).

5. Short cutting the course at any point will result in instant disqualification of the entire team. There are notified check points along the course and there are concealed check points. Cameras are used to verify participants’ adherence to the rules. In the case that an athlete attempts to shortcut the course he will be given a warning and provided with one opportunity to return to the point where he/she left the course and continue on the correct route.

6. The route of the Marathon Relay is the same as that of the 42.195km race. At all times the 42k athletes shall have priority over the relay runners and the relay runners are obliged to give way to 42.195k  athletes at all times. They must not interfere with those runners at any time. Doing so may result in disqualification.

7. Athletes running the first stage of the relay will line up together with the 42k athletes in the same start line. They should not push their way to the front of the race as this area is reserved for Elite Marathon runners. They should follow the starters orders about when to line up and where to line up. Both races will start together. Remember that it is a long race and that you should always start at 80% of your best pace in order that you will finish your distance in good form.

8. Athletes running the subsequent legs of the race must follow the orders of the relay station managers. Athletes may not stand on the course unless instructed to do so by the relay station manager. Failure to follow the instructions of the relay station manager may result in disqualification of the team.

9. No athlete may step outside of the relay zone marked on the road. There are 10 meters before the relay station and 10 meters after the relay station (a total of 20 meters) where athletes may receive the baton from their arriving team mate. The baton must be exchanged between team members inside this zone ONLY. The zone is marked on the floor with a white line.

10. There are water stations for the marathon at the relay stations. The water provided there is for the exclusive use of 42.195k athletes only. Water will be provided for the relay athletes. However, we recommend that all athletes bring their own provisions with them for the waiting period on the course.

11. A bus will pick up all Athletes from the Forum de Beyrouth and will return athletes back to the Forum de Beyrouth. There is a shuttle bus from the Forum de Beyrouth for team members wishing to go to the finish line of the marathon to meet up with their fellow team members. Any team or team member wishes to leave after completing his/her part may do so.

12. Only the 6th runner will cross the finish line at the 42.195km point. Athletes may then meet up after the end of the finish line.

13. All athletes will receive their medal and goody bag at the relay station where they finish their race.

14. In the event that an athlete does not complete his leg of the race, the Relay Station Manager will inform the waiting athlete that he may go back down the course to meet the athlete who cannot complete his or her run and collect the baton and then continue the race from that point. This may only be done if sanctioned by the Relay Station Manager and will only be as a result of an athlete completely retiring from the race.

15. Athletes may only retire from the race at a Red Cross station along the course. When retiring they must submit their bib number to the Red Cross who will inform the operations room that this athlete has retired from the race, who will in turn inform the Relay Station Manager at the nearest relay station.

16. There are cheering stations at each relay station where members of the public are invited to come and cheer the runners and where family and friends may wait to greet their athletes. it is forbidden for those on the cheering stations to interfere in the race in any way, and they must not under any circumstances
stand on the course.

17. The Relay race is an official race conducted under IAAF rules and as such international rules of road races and road relay races apply.

18. A member of the Relay Race Manager’s team will record the arrival time of each team at each station. The net times for each athlete will be calculated following the race and will be posted on-line at www.beirutmarathon.org the following day  – 28th November by 18:00.

19. There are three podium positions in the relay race, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. These podium positions will be announced during the Awards Ceremony at the finish line Awards Ceremony at 18:00 at the Expo Tent at martyr’s Square.

20. The objective of the relay race is to provide teams with the opportunity to compete on an even level.
